Private browsing — called Incognito in Chrome, Private in Safari and Firefox, and InPrivate in Edge — prevents your browser from saving your history, cookies, and form data on this device. It does not make you anonymous online; your internet provider and the websites you visit can still see your activity.

Google Chrome

On a Mac or Windows PC

Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner of the browser window and choose New Incognito Window. You can also use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows, or ⌘+Shift+N on Mac. An Incognito window will open with a dark header and a hat-and-glasses icon confirming you’re in private mode.

On an iPhone or iPad

Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the bottom-right corner, then tap New Incognito Tab. The browser will switch to a dark-themed view.

On an Android device

Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner, then tap New Incognito Tab. A dark header with the hat-and-glasses icon confirms you’re in Incognito mode.

Safari (Apple devices only)

On a Mac

Open Safari and go to File → New Private Window in the menu bar. You can also use the shortcut ⌘+Shift+N. The address bar will have a dark background when Private Browsing is active.

On an iPhone or iPad

Tap the Tabs button (two overlapping squares) in the bottom-right corner. Tap the tab group label at the bottom center of the screen (it may say “X Tabs” or show a name), then select Private. Tap Done, then open a new tab. The browser will turn dark to indicate Private mode is on.

Note for older iOS: On iOS 14 and earlier, tap the Tabs button, then tap Private in the bottom-left corner.

Mozilla Firefox

On a Mac or Windows PC

Click the menu button (☰) in the top-right corner and select New Private Window. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or ⌘+Shift+P on Mac. A purple mask icon in the toolbar confirms you’re in a Private window.

On an iPhone or iPad

Tap the Tabs button (the square with a number) at the bottom of the screen, then tap the Mask icon or look for the Private tab option. Tap + to open a new private tab.

On an Android device

Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner and select New Private Tab. A purple mask icon will appear to confirm you’re browsing privately.

Microsoft Edge

On a Mac or Windows PC

Click the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top-right corner and select New InPrivate Window. The shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or ⌘+Shift+N on Mac. InPrivate windows have a dark header with an “InPrivate” badge in the top-right corner.

On an iPhone or iPad

Tap the three-dot menu (⋯) at the bottom of the screen, then tap New InPrivate Tab. The browser will shift to a dark theme.

On an Android device
